Welcome to the

University of Memphis!

We’re so glad you’re spending time in Tiger Nation and thinking about becoming a part of our impressive roar. This self-guided campus visit is a great way to get a feel for how the UofM will prepare you for anything you put your mind to. Here are the main stops on this tour, but you’ll learn and see much more:

Parking

570 Houston Street
We recommend that visitors park in the Southern Avenue Parking Garage (listed as PG3 on the campus map). If using GPS, just type in "570 Houston Street" as your destination. From the garage, take the Hunter Harrison Memorial Bridge to walk across Southern Avenue toward the center of campus.

1

Stop 1: Luther C. McClellan Alumni Mall

After crossing over the pedestrian bridge, head down to the large, open lawn space. Welcome to the heart of Tiger Nation! This is the Luther C. McClellan Alumni Mall (listed as Alumni Mall on the map) where students hang out, food trucks pull up to feed hungry Tigers and events happen year-round, like Homecoming festivities and the Involvement Fair at the start of every new school year. At the far end of the lawn is a grand building adorned with Tiger banners — this is the Administration Building, home to the Offices of the University President and Provost, as well as some other key administrative departments.

Stop 2: Maxine A. Smith University Center

2

499 University Street
Enter the large building on your right with a bronze statue of TOM the Tiger out front. You have arrived at the hub of campus life – the Maxine A. Smith University Center. Great eats, like Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, a coffee shop and a quick market, are scattered throughout the first floor — you can grab and go or sit down for a while. On the second floor, you’ll find helpful resources like the Post Office, Tiger Food Pantry, Technology Hub with computers and the Involvement Zone that houses student organizations. Large conference and event spaces are on the third floor. On the main floor, cross eastward through the facility and use the far set of doors to exit. Veer to the right to get to the University Bookstore.

3

Stop 3: University Bookstore

505 Zach H Curlin Street
Enter the Bookstore through the sliding doors to see where many students order books for each semester, grab their Tiger gear, pick up snacks or take a break from studying at Starbucks. On the second level, there is a Tiger Banking Center and University Eye Care. Exit the building the same way you came in, take a right, then go north under the Clock Tower. You’ll soon see our Student Plaza, surrounded by flagpoles, on the left side of the sidewalk. (The fountain in the center of the plaza is usually on, except during colder months or when being repaired.)

Stop 4: Student Plaza & Michael D. Rose Theatre

470 University Street
From the Student Plaza and fountain, look to your right and you’ll see the Michael D. Rose Theatre. Both are campus hot spots. The Student Plaza is often alive with activity from info fairs and events, including the Homecoming Kickoff when the fountain turns an electric hue of Tiger Blue! The Rose Theatre is one of our largest auditoriums. Just as you pass Rose Theatre, you’ll see a sidewalk guiding you to the right to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Take the ramp at the end of the sidewalk to get there.

5

Stop 5: Elma Roane Fieldhouse

495 Zach H Curlin Street
Welcome to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse — the stomping grounds of women’s basketball. Recent updates to the fieldhouse make it an intimidating environment for opponents, but an exciting one for Memphis players and fans. For men’s basketball games, you’ll head to FedExForum downtown. Our football team plays at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, just a few miles off campus.

The Elma Roane Fieldhouse shares space with our College of Health Sciences which teaches the principles of health, exercise, nutrition and physical activity. It’s home to the Center for Nutraceutical and Dietary Supplement Research where they investigate ingredients and supplements for safety and efficacy and the Sport Performance and Health Consulting Center that provides health testing and is used by athletes for performance-based testing. Head back down the ramp and turn right towards the Tiger statue decorated with our Fight Song.

6

Stop 6: Memorial Field

You are now at Memorial Field, where the University’s Mighty Sound of the South marching band practices and our ROTC runs drills. From the vantage point of the field, you get a glimpse of several buildings. Facing north, the beautiful historic building on your left is Scates Hall, home to the College of Arts and Sciences. Ahead of you are the ROTC offices, and just beyond those are Robison Hall, where our School of Public Health is located, and the Student Health Center.

Head to the opening to the right of Scates Hall and turn right onto the main sidewalk. Take note that you are in the vicinity of several key buildings on campus. To your left is Manning Hall, home to our Physics Department. Beyond that is Jones Hall which houses our Architecture Department and the Tiger Den, an all-you-can-eat buffet-style dining option. There’s also a Subway inside of Jones Hall.

Stop 7: Ned R. McWherter Library

Straight ahead on your right, look for the large building with columns out front and a cupola domed top. The Ned R. McWherter Library is the main library and one of the favorite quiet spots on campus to study. The floor plan is the length and width of a football field, so it’s the size of four football fields stacked on top of each other. Librarians are available most hours of the day to assist with research, resources or arranging to help students find books not in our stacks through the interlibrary loan system. If we don’t have it, we can get it for you! Many students take advantage of the library’s ever-expanding Technology Sandbox to explore 3D computer-aided design, gaming systems, cameras and 3D printers. New tools are always being added, so check it out.

Stop 8: Herff College of Engineering

8

3817 Central Avenue
Leaving the Library, take a right, then turn right again and head toward an iron abstract sculpture. This sidewalk takes you to the Herff Engineering complex, situated on your left. Herff offers five different departments: Biomedical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical and Engineering Technology. Students research and create alongside professional engineers and mentors, which is why you’ll find a research lab around almost every corner in our Engineering Science building. Relax in the dedicated engineering student lounge or collaborate with peers in the work room filled with all the necessary tools. Engineering students often take part in paid experiences with our industrial partners, including some of the world’s biggest biomedical and logistics companies headquartered here in Memphis.

9

Stop 9: Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music

3775 Central Avenue
Head back the way you came, then turn right at the Art Museum sign. (Feel free to step inside the Art Museum, located in the Communication and Fine Arts Building, to explore treasures from various cultures, past and present. Admission is free.)

Straight ahead on your right you’ll find the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Since Memphis is the home of the blues and the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll, it’s no surprise that our program is one of the largest in the Southeast. We are the only program in the Mid-South offering a doctoral degree in music. Our student ensembles, ranging from jazz to opera to pop and more, perform in our Harris Auditorium and the new state-of-the-art Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center, located directly across Central Avenue. The new facility serves our students with rehearsal spaces, classrooms, modern laboratories and a premier performing arts center to showcase the extraordinary talents of our students.

To your left is the Department of Theatre & Dance. As a side note, you’ll be happy to know that students can attend all kinds of performances and events in art, music, theatre and dance for free.

Go up the stairs ahead or through the door on the lower level of either building to access an elevator to take you to the second floor.
Head toward Central Avenue. Across the street, you can see the new Scheidt Family Music Center. Turn left and stay on this side of the street as you walk westward. You'll pass by the Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art (3715 Central Avenue) and our Art and Communication Building (also 3715 Central Avenue).

Stop 10: Holiday Inn/Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality

330 Innovation Drive
Across the street, you’ll see our fully operational Holiday Inn, home to our Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management. Our students get real-world experience running this hotel! It was created by and named for Kemmons Wilson Sr., who founded the first hotel chain, Holiday Inn, right here in Memphis. Other areas of concentration include Sport and Leisure Management and the Culinary Arts.

The next building on your left is the Fogelman Executive Center, a multi-purpose facility and home to our University Middle School and High School. You heard that right — these schools are two of four laboratory schools on campus serving youth from preschool all the way up to high school. So, our College of Education majors are able to research, teach and observe in real classroom settings without leaving campus.

10

Stop 11: Fogelman College of Business & Economics

11

3675 Central Avenue
After passing the Fogelman Executive Center, turn left onto Innovation Drive (named DeLoach Street on the north side of Central Ave.) and continue until you see the Fogelman College of Business and Economics (FCBE) on your right. FCBE offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in Accountancy, Business Information and Technology, Economics, Finance, Insurance and Real Estate, Management and Marketing and Supply Chain Management. Memphis is home to many of America’s greatest corporations, including Fortune 500 companies, and FCBE partners with them to provide unparalleled opportunities for students to train, work and succeed. Our in-house Cook Analytics and Trading Lab is a facsimile of a Wall Street trading firm, featuring cutting-edge technology that provides students with hands-on experience. Additional labs are dedicated to measuring biometric responses to marketing stimuli and data analytics.

Stop 12: FedEx Institute of Technology

365 Innovationn Drive
After passing the FCBE building, you’ll see an ultramodern chrome and glass building known as the FedEx Institute of Technology (FIT). It's home to cutting-edge research and innovation in emerging technologies. With a focus on bringing researchers together from varying disciplines across campus, the Institute has achieved breakthroughs in intelligent systems, drones, autonomous vehicles, precision medicine and more. The Institute has a unique partnership with FedEx to sponsor advanced research. The space itself is a high-tech facility with advanced amenities to host high-profile events, including an amphitheater with the second-largest implementation of digital congress units outside the United Nations Building.

Directly across the street from FIT is one of three parking garages. Access to General Parking is included in tuition and consists of lots around the perimeter of campus. For an additional fee for Priority Parking, you can get closer to your residence hall/classes in lots and garages on campus.

Rounding the corner of the FIT, pass the colorful Tiger statue and the outdoor patio and head straight to Patterson Street, but don’t cross over.

13

Stop 13: Residential Halls

3615 Central Avenue
The large five-story building that you can see across Patterson Street is our newest coed residence hall, Centennial Place. This hall is home to 800 students who have the option to choose from single or double rooms that have shared private restrooms, or you can select an apartment that is comprised of six rooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen area. Of course, all the other modern conveniences you can ever want are in the hall, like an onsite convenience store, free laundry facilities, group collaboration spaces, private study areas and nearby parking. A virtual tour is available on our website to learn more about life at Centennial Place or all the other housing options on campus.

Now turn left and head south down Patterson Street. You’ll be passing more residential options, including Smith Hall (women only) and the Living Learning Complex (LLC), which is coed and can group students together by shared interests and areas of study. Also located on Patterson is our International Student Center and Honors Hall. Did you know that the UofM has the largest Honors program in the State of Tennessee? Honors students get priority lodging in the LLC.

Keep going straight on Patterson Street until, on your left, you see the tallest building on campus.

Stop 14: John S. Wilder Tower

3675 Alumni Avenue
This 12-story high-rise building is known as Wilder Tower, home to all things student services, including admissions, scholarships, transcripts, academic counseling center, career services and University Student & Business Services. Just outside the tower, you’ll notice a safety phone terminal marked with a blue light. These phones are scattered around campus. Should you ever want to be escorted to your car or a building, you can call for assistance.

Enter Wilder Tower from Patterson Street, walk through to the other side, then exit the building and walk to the nearby clock. Glancing back at Wilder Tower, you’ll see that immediately next door, on the right, is Brister Hall, one of the four original buildings on campus and home to the College of Professional and Liberal Studies (CPLS). CPLS is a degree program that allows you to create your own major if you can’t find what you are looking for in any of our 220+ areas of study.

From the clock, locate the sidewalk between Mitchell Hall and Clement Hall. Take this sidewalk to get back to the Luther C. McClellan Alumni Mall, then turn right and walk towards the bridge. Use the Hunter Harrison Memorial Bridge to take you across Southern Avenue.

14

Stop 15: R. Brad Martin Student Wellness Center

3735 Southern Avenue
Once across the bridge, descend to your left to visit the new R. Brad Martin Student Wellness Center and the nearby rec center. That’s right — we have two facilities dedicated to fitness, nutrition and well-being. The combined complex offers just about any sport or recreation activity you can imagine. Students use their student ID for free access to indoor and outdoor pools, basketball and racquetball courts, teaching kitchens, a health food café, advanced fitness areas/studios, a sauna and beautiful gathering spaces. The College of Health Sciences has dedicated space in the Wellness Center, and academic classrooms are integrated into the space.

Conclusion

If you parked at the Southern Avenue Parking Garage, it is right next to the R. Brad Martin Student Wellness Center.

We’re so happy you stopped by, and we hope to see you back on campus soon! Go Tigers Go!
